HANDMADE- why does it appeal to us?
Until today (while researching quotes regarding handmade things), I never knew this one odd factoid:
Some people actually despise you for making things by hand.
Today's article is not for those people.
I suppose that the hidden message in the photo above pretty much says it all when it comes to the mentality of Handmade vs Commercially produced. Within the process of making something by hand, there is MORE LOVE. This would explain a few things about nature and about life...about the way that the world is and about commercialism. This would certainly be an interesting study in humanity or in Sociology if we allow it to. But I am not doing that in today's article, although I could.
What the phrase "Handmade" means to me is that a person created something. They engineered it with primitive tools and techniques. The object is individual, unique and NOT mass-produced. The items MAY be of high quality but it also may not...that is the way of handmade things. Much like love from the quote further up, it is unpredictable and ever-changing. The hope with a handmade gift is that the gift is irreplaceable and memorable. Is it the packaging? The presentation? The objects themselves? What makes a handmade gift so meaningful?
I decided that today instead making things, I would gather inspiration from my favorite handmade things and then share about them here. In all honestly, I have made some of these things myself. I wonder if this makes me egocentric. ALL people who are creative capture ideas from other people, places and things. But how they use those experiences to create their own inspired things, that is the uniqueness in it. I have MANY creative friends in my world. I have learned by watching them and I have grown in my appreciation of their processes due to the fact that their gifts moved my heart!
EXERCISE
Try this at home.
I spent about 30 minutes roaming around the house to locate items that I keep on hand/on display or USE which were made by hand.
Amazingly, I located at least 45 items between my bathroom, my bedroom, my kitchen, Dining and Living Rooms, my son's bedroom and my Studio and Laundry room. This is not an exhaustive list, but I had A LOT of fun remembering where I got certain handmade items. Here is a photo journal of items I found in the house. Enjoy!
What is at your house that is Handmade and loved?
Stuffed animal? And old sweater? How about a special blanket?
Share it with me. I want to see.
